This page features photos of campaigners and supporters across the U.S. and around the world calling for the closure of the prison at Guantánamo Bay via posters marking every 100 days of Guantánamo’s existence, as posted on our Gitmo Clock website, which shows in real time how long Guantánamo has been open.
We began this campaign seven years ago, on January 11, 2018 (the 16th anniversary of the opening of Guantánamo), and as 2025 begins we’re marking 8,400 days of the prison’s existence on January 9, with the 23rd anniversary of its opening following on January 11. Further posters, available soon, will mark 8,500 days on April 19, 8,600 days on July 28, 8,700 days on November 5, and 8,767 days on January 11, 2026, and we will continue this campaign until, eventually, Guantánamo is closed.
Seven years ago, as Trump’s second disastrous year in office began, 41 men were still held at Guantánamo, and he released just one man in the whole of his four years as president. Until recently, President Biden had managed only to free another ten men, but in the last few weeks there has been a frenzy of activity, leading to the release of another 15 men (including eleven Yemenis resettled in Oman), halving the population and leaving just 15 men still held, who you can read about here in our updated definitive prisoner list.
Please see below for all of the 8,400 days photos we’ve received, including a particularly compelling collection of photos taken in San Francisco by Gavrilah Wells, an activist who takes the poster with her on walks around the city, engaging with those she meets and encouraging them to support the campaign. Although some people aren’t interested, and others are unwilling for be identified publicly, many people are receptive, and her portraits provide a compelling counter-narrative to the prevailing view that no one is interested in Guantánamo. The reality is that people are, and that an untold number of Americans despise what is being done in their name at Guantánamo, but normally no one ever asks them for their opinion.

History will not regard you well if you allow these men to languish at Guantánamo for another four years, under Donald Trump, reinforcing the sad reality that, at Guantánamo, successive U.S. governments have fundamentally had no problem with holding human beings indefinitely without charge or trial, the hallmark not of a democracy, but of a dictatorship."
